The volume contains typed transcripts of letters written by Isabella du Pont Sharp to her sister Margaretta du Pont Carpenter while the Sharp family, friends and children's nurses traveled around the world. The letters were collected, transcribed and printed for the use of family members by her son, Hugh R. Sharp, Jr.

H. Rodney Sharp was born on July 30, 1880. On June 6, 1908, he married Isabella Mathieu du Pont, the daughter of Lammot du Pont, Sr., thus becoming the brother-in-law of Pierre S., Henry B., Irénée, and Lammot du Pont, the leading figures in E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company.
